Waar ben je op dit moment mee bezig?
“Momenteel werk ik aan een aantal zelf geïnitieerde fotografie projecten die de relatie tussen mens en stedelijke omgeving onderzoeken. Ik vind dit fascinerend omdat we in een wereld leven die we zelf vormgeven, maar die tegelijkertijd ook ons vormt. Op dit moment ben ik bezig met een project met werktitel “Corporate Sunset” waarbij ik foto’s maak van grote kantoren tijdens zonsondergang. Dit jaar wil ik vijf ideeën omzetten in beginnende projecten. Aan het einde van het jaar hoop ik een paar series te hebben waar ik verder mee ga en die die ik kan gebruiken voor portfolio reviews.

Tegelijkertijd ben ik met verschillende opdrachten bezig, portretten en beeldverhalen. Een ervan is een langlopend project voor Waag Futurelab. Ik leg hiervoor vast hoe vlas planten worden getransformeerd tot een jurk voor de burgemeester van Amsterdam. Heel tof!”

Wat heeft de samenwerking met Makerting je gebracht?
“Voordat ik bij Marlou kwam lag mijn focus op opdrachtwerk. Ik deed uitdagende opdrachten, zoals het maken van beeldbanken, campagnemateriaal voor een hypotheek en portretten voor GroenLinks-PvdA. Het was fijn om hier mee bezig te zijn na een moeizame corona periode, toch merkte ik dat er voor mij iets miste. Ik vroeg me soms af: wie ben ik als maker en hoe kan ik dat tot uiting brengen? Het voelde alsof mijn creatieve kompas, dat na mijn afstuderen aan de Kunstacademie nog scherp afgesteld stond, vertroebeld was. Hoewel ik me sindsdien enorm had ontwikkeld, was ik van mijn koers afgedreven.

Ik heb bij Marlou het Personal Branding Traject gevolgd. Dit heeft me in de eerste plaats weer helder laten inzien waar mijn kwaliteiten en interesses liggen. Vervolgens hebben we gekeken naar hoe dit in te zetten. Het meest fijn aan dit traject vind ik het werkboek. Het dwingt om zaken helder op te schrijven en eenmaal ingevuld is het als een landkaart die helpt om de juiste koers te blijven volgen. Het is niet zo dat deze inzichten onmiddellijk verandering teweeg brengen. In mijn geval is het een langer proces. Soms vind ik het wel eens moeilijk om daar geduld voor te hebben. Stoïcijns doorgaan is een belangrijke kwaliteit die ik probeer om me eigen te maken haha!”

Hoe zie je de toekomst?
“In de toekomst wil ik me verder specialiseren in het vastleggen van de relatie tussen mens en omgeving, zowel in opdracht als in autonome projecten. Opdrachtwerk voor Land Art Flevoland, met haar indrukwekkende landschapskunst, was een mooie stap in die richting. Over vijf jaar wil ik dat mijn volledige portfolio bestaat uit dit soort werk. Een droomopdracht? De sociale dynamiek documenteren in een gebouw zoals het Forum in Groningen. Een nog grotere droom: ik zou heel graag naar het buitenland gaan, bijvoorbeeld naar grote moderne steden in Azië of het Midden-Oosten. Daar ligt, denk ik, een enorme bron van inspiratie.”

Heb je tips voor Mede-Makers?
“Ik heb met vallen en opstaan gemerkt dat, hoe simpel het ook misschien klinkt, plezier en interesse een hele belangrijke raadgever zijn voor mij. Als deze twee aanwezig zijn in opdrachten, dan gaat alles meer als vanzelf. Als creatief ondernemer werk je vaak alleen, wat kan leiden tot te veel in je eigen gedachten zitten. Juist daarom is het zo waardevol om andere creatieven op te zoeken. Ik zie hen bijna nooit als concurrenten, iedereen heeft immers een unieke visie. Juist door genereus met elkaar te delen, kan je samen verder komen alleen.”

Ben je op zoek naar hulp (of inspiratie) van andere Makers en wat zoek je dan?
” Zeker. Ik kom graag in contact met makers die zich bezighouden met architectuur, stedelijke ontwikkeling of het gebruik van de openbare ruimte. Het lijkt me interessant om ervaringen uit te wisselen met andere creatieven die ook in dit veld actief zijn of samenwerken met professionals. Wie weet wat daaruit kan ontstaan!”

What are you currently working on?
‘I am currently working on a number of self-initiated photography projects that explore the relationship between humans and the urban environment. I find this fascinating because we live in a world that we shape ourselves, but that also shapes us. At the moment I am working on a project with the working title “Corporate Sunset” in which I take photos of large offices during sunset. This year I want to turn five ideas into starting projects. By the end of the year I hope to have a few series that I will continue with and that I can use for portfolio reviews.’

At the same time I am working on various assignments, portraits and visual stories. One of them is a long-term project for Waag Futurelab. For this I am recording how flax plants are transformed into a dress for the mayor of Amsterdam. Very cool!’

What has the collaboration with Makerting brought you (so far)?
‘Before I came to Marlou, my focus was on commissioned work. I did challenging assignments, such as creating image banks, campaign material for a mortgage and portraits for GroenLinks-PvdA. It was nice to be involved in this after a difficult corona period, but I noticed that something was missing for me. I sometimes wondered: who am I as a creator and how can I express that? It felt as if my creative compass, which was still sharply set after graduating from the Art Academy, was clouded. Although I had developed enormously since then, I had drifted off course.

I followed the Personal Branding Program with Marlou. This first and foremost gave me a clear insight into where my qualities and interests lie. We then looked at how to use this. What I like most about this program is the workbook. It forces you to write things down clearly and once filled in, it is like a map that helps you stay on the right course. It is not the case that these insights immediately bring about change. In my case, it is a longer process. Sometimes I find it hard to have the patience for that. Stoically continuing is an important quality that I try to acquire haha!’

How do you see the future?
‘In the future, I want to specialize further in capturing the relationship between people and their environment, both on commission and in autonomous projects. Commissioned work for Land Art Flevoland, with its impressive landscape art, was a great step in that direction. In five years, I want my entire portfolio to consist of this kind of work. A dream assignment? Documenting the social dynamics in a building like the Forum in Groningen. An even bigger dream: I would love to go abroad, for example to large modern cities in Asia or the Middle East. I think that is where a huge source of inspiration lies.’ 

Do you have any tips for fellow makers?
‘I have noticed through trial and error that, as simple as it may sound, fun and interest are very important advisors to me. When these two are present in assignments, everything goes more naturally. As a creative entrepreneur, you often work alone, which can lead to being too much in your own thoughts. That is precisely why it is so valuable to seek out other creatives. I almost never see them as competitors, after all, everyone has a unique vision. By sharing generously with each other, you can move forward together alone.’

Are you looking for help (or inspiration) from other Makers and what are you looking for?
‘Definitely. I would like to get in touch with makers who are involved in architecture, urban development or the use of public space. I think it would be interesting to exchange experiences with other creatives who are also active in this field or collaborate with professionals. Who knows what can come of it!’
